"We" are lawyers and leaders in the legal strategy, marketing and business development, process improvement and project management, and innovation arenas with a particular passion for sustainability and social impact.
We come from different organizations, we aren’t selling anything, and we have no financial stake in this effort or motivation - except to bring people together to heighten awareness and impact. Please do not hesitate to contact us directly (JoinUs@legalSASI.com) if you would like to discuss this movement, offer ideas, or volunteer for a leadership or support role.
“You” is the entire legal ecosystem: lawyers in firms and in corporate and government legal departments; staff across all roles and functions (administrators, HR/legal personnel/recruiting, IT, library, marketing/business development/communications, paralegals, administrative assistants and other professionals); educators and academics, consultants and service providers to the legal industry (of any type from software to stationery to litigation support staffing); legal service organizations and bar associations; law students; and others.
Let’s start with why now, which is likely evident from the events of recent months.
Social impact and sustainability issues are not new, nor is the legal industry’s involvement in them. However, we perceive the world has arrived at a tipping point for these issues and, happily, more people and organizations than ever are aware of social and sustainability issues and wish to take action. We think the drive to action will only continue to grow in the coming months and years.
Lawyers, legal service organizations, and the legal system at large play a critical role in social impact and sustainability, albeit in different ways. We, therefore, think the legal sector should have a common platform for connecting and sharing ideas and resources on these topics. We aim for our movement to provide this platform.
As for the “what,” we are talking about a suite of interconnected issues that include corporate social responsibility (CSR) (which, itself, includes charitable, community service, and pro bono efforts by most definitions, as well as ethics), environmental and social governance (ESG, which can also include ethics), sustainability, racial justice, environmental justice, health justice, access to food and education, diversity and inclusion, and more.
Each of these areas is distinct and various actors in the legal sector are already doing great work in all of them.
Herein lies a major part of our reason for forming this movement: various groups are doing great work in disconnected ways, or to different standards (or with lack of awareness about standards or helpful resources). At a time of economic pressure, none of us nor our organizations can afford to waste time or money on ineffective pursuits. Thus, we perceive an opportunity to foster conversation, share resources, and celebrate success and accomplishment in order to empower others to act and treble everyone’s efforts and impact.
By the way, this is a non-partisan, apolitical movement. We are not and do not envision becoming a charity, and do not envision ourselves collecting funds, performing charitable/community work directly or endorsing any specific cause or organization. Again, we see our sole mission as connecting like-minded and inspired people throughout the legal sector, globally, on the issues of social impact and sustainability and empowering them to take action by sharing information, resources, and best practices gleaned from multiple venues of experience.
For now, two things:
1. Join our LinkedIn group, which we will use to share developments and communicate the findings of our launch survey, and stay connected generally. If you wish to play a larger role or have ideas we should consider as we get going, please email the organizers below at JoinUs@legalSASI.com.
2. Take our benchmarking survey so we can gather information and share it with all, and develop resources that will be most helpful.
